Introduction

  1. The government has adopted several policies to fulfill the increasing demand for oil and gas.
  2. The government has allowed 100% Foreign Direct Investment (FDI) in natural gas, petroleum products, and refineries among others.
  3. It attracts domestics and foreign investment.
  4. India has been the 4th largest Liquefied Natural Gas (LNG) importer since 2011 after Japan, South Korea, and China.

Government Initiatives

  • The oil Minister plans to set up bio-CNG plants and allow infrastructure at a cost Rs. 7000 cr. (US $ 1.10 billion) to promote the use of clean fuel. (December 2007)
  • Government of Haryana signed a memorandum of understanding with Indian Oil Corporation (IOCL) for setting up bio-CNG plants based on paddy straw and other agriculture waste in the state. First compressed biogas plant (CBP) be set up in Kurukshetra. (September 2018)
  • Oil Minister Dharmendra Pradhan said that Government’s plan to set up 5,000 compressed bio-gas plants by 2023-24 and it will give a boost to the country’s Bamboo Production and also will produce gas from bio and crop wastes. (November 2020)
  • Bio-CNG plant was set up at Mahindra World City and Mahindra World City Chennai has become India’s first food waste-free city. (January 2016)
  • Mr. Dharmendra Pradhan, Minister of Petroleum and Natural Gas of India said that state-run oil firms are planning to invest worth Rs. 723 cr. (the US $ 111.30 million) in Utter Pradesh. It will help to improve LPG infrastructure and generate employment. (September 2017)
  • Petroleum and Natural Gas Regulator Board (PNGRB) simplified gas pipeline structure to make fuel more affordable for distance users and attract investment of building gas infrastructure. (November 2020)
  • Indian Government urges OPEC to remove pricing anomalies for different regions with a view to aid the Corona-battered global oil Industry to get back to normal. (November 2020)

Kayakave Kailasa

  • Indian Scheme’’ Kayakave Kailasa’, the Ministry of Petroleum and Natural Gas has enabled SC/ST entrepreneurs in providing bulk LPG transportation. (Budget 2019-2020)
  • Minister for Petroleum and Natural Gas and Steel has appealed to the Scientific Community to innovate for India (I4I) and create competitive advantages to make India “Aatmanirbhar” (December 2020)
  • Union Minister of Petroleum and Natural Gas (MoPNG) has released the Hydrocarbon Vision 2030. The purpose of this vision is to improve the social-economical development of the north-east region including states Assam, Arunachal Pradesh, Meghalaya, Manipur, Nagaland, Sikkim, Mizoram, and Tripura. (February 2016)
  • MoPNG launched the Project Development Cell (PDC). This cell helps investors’ interest and gives them opportunities. (February 2021)
  • Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman has announced the extension of the Ujjwala scheme covering more beneficiaries, gas pipeline project in Jammu and Kashmir, and setting up independent gas transport system operator. (Union Budget 2021-2022)
  • The government will add 100 more districts to the City Gas Distribution Network in the next 3 years. (Union Budget 2021-2022)
